US Cerbie Gets a New Windshield

I cracked my windshield within a week of getting my Cerbie. So I bought another one from Fernies—in person! I lugged it back as “hand luggage” and kept it in the  space between the last row of seats and the galley in the airplane. Having trekked across numerous pubs and underground stations in England, the replacement windshield had survived the trip across the Atlantic with just a couple of minor chips at the bottom.

I didn’t really care about the crack in my windscreen (it had finally stopped spreading!) but I got tired of all the comments. So I finally decided to call around and see if anyone was willing to do the work. A friend of a friend of a friend put me in touch with the right people. An afternoon of “telecommuting” allowed me to be home when the van pulled up.

After the requisite ooohing and aaahing, the guy set to work. He cut the rubber molding out first. The next (most tedious) part of the job was getting the carbon fibre trim pieces off. First he cut throught the adhesive between the glass and the carbon fibre pieces.

Using this very cool tool, which is a bent blade with two handles, one on a flexible cable, he was able to get under the trim pieces from behind, where the space is much too limited for a regular blade.

There are also two rivets that have to be drilled out. Then you struggle and tug and pull some more!

The cracks had multiplied, so we were beyond the point of no return.
