I was in pit lane hanging over the wall during qualifying, literally inches away from the cars as they screamed past. The Cerbera was 2nd in qualifying, and I just knew it was going to be a good race the next day, despite Shorty telling me he was worried about the replacement engine's reliability.
Shorty drove us back to the hotel in the hire car, and he is a great driver. Although completely unfamiliar with the car, he was fast and smooth, and at the limit of adhesion in the hairpins, but he never over-rotated the car or slammed the brakes on due to misjudgement. It was a real eye-opener, being driven around by him. That night it was just an early dinner light and light drinking session before bed. I had been up for two and a half days by now, so I could sleep standing on my feet. But Shorty had arranged a couple of rooms in the Hotel Val de la Cascade in a town named Coo, about 6 miles from the track. It was a pretty little village, and the hotel was great. There were two Griffs, two Chimps, one silver Cerbie (Chris East's?) and of course, the Mole Valley Cerbera 4.5 lw in the parking lot. Plus a ton of superbikes and some Harleys (ugh).
